Eight trade-off questions

The environmental self-check a product team can actually finish in four minutes — not a 78-criteria audit.

Answer the eight questions.

The score updates as you go, in your browser. Answer for the team and the product you actually have, not the one you wish you had — a flattering score helps nobody.

Where this comes from

It is the free extract of a paid kit that goes further: a 20-criteria scoring grid, a three-line “Impact” block to paste into tickets, a five-slide template for the steering committee, four metrics and four traps. That kit currently exists in French only, so there is no buy link on this page — it would be selling you a document you can't read. If an English edition would be useful to you, say so: perennova@proton.me. That is the whole ask.

Check a real page

A scoring grid says what is required; it does not say whether it is delivered. The eco-design scanner measures what a public page actually costs to load — bytes downloaded, requests, third-party dependencies — and fills in a score out of 20, each point backed by the measured fact.

October 2026 barometer: homepage weight of France’s 20 largest cities

This is neither an audit nor a compliance check. It is derived from the French public reference framework for sustainable digital services, the RGESN — 78 criteria, published by Arcep and Arcom with ADEME, free and public: ecoresponsable.numerique.gouv.fr. Start there if your goal is an audit.

The weighting behind the questions leans on the ADEME–Arcep study finding that user devices accounted for 64–92% of the footprint of digital services depending on the indicator (2022 edition; the January 2025 update, which counts data centres located abroad, puts devices at 50% of the carbon footprint) — which is why “don't push people to replace their hardware” outranks “optimise the server”.
